“TEVIE BOYS RUE MISSED CHANCES”

Teversal welcomed the league new boys Brighouse Town to Carnarvon Street and the visitors left with a gift of all three points after the home side failed to capitalise on the openings they created and the visitors may be thinking that the step up is an easy one after this workman like performance.

The opening exchanges saw both sides trying to play football and it was Brighouse who created the first opening of note when Mathews through ball found Roy who lifted his effort over the advancing Herring, but Pride did superbly to track back to clear the goal-bound effort. Teversal wasn’t to be out done when Gee-Pemberton found Marchetta who in turn held of the defender before forcing Brown into a routine save down low to his right.

For a period up to the break, the home side dominate proceedings, which started when Orton seized on a far post corner that was blocked by Rodgers. Orton then fired over the bar after an enterprising build up which was possible the best move of the afternoon, involved Lyall, Townroe and Hudson.

With half time approaching Townroe thought his 20-yard effort had put a true reflection on the game for the Tevie Boys, but Brown made an excellent full length save that saw the visitors the happier of the two sides going in 0-0 at the break.

Brighouse came out the sharper of the two sides and a free kick and corner in early exchanges saw the home side showing their defensive metal in the short spell of pressure. But after that initial five minute spell the home side regained control of the game, but to be fair to the new boys stood up to the test and defended their goal superbly.

Teversal did create ample opportunities with Orton firstly put clear by Townroe, but the striker pulled his effort past Brown and wide of the upright. On the hour mark Teversal had the ball in the net twice, but both efforts were ruled out, firstly Hudson combined with Orton but was ruled offside as he lifted the effort over Brown. The second effort saw Townroe round Brown and pulling the ball back for Gee-Pemberton to fire home, but this effort was ruled out because Townroe had been adjudged to allow the ball to run out at the by-line after rounding the Brighouse Keeper.

This gave Brighouse the belief it was there day and the game began to become more open with both sides creating routine openings. On 78 minutes though the home side again went close when Gee-Pemberton put an inch perfect cross into the visitors six yard box with Marchetta timing his run to meet the cross, but the visitors Custodian was delighted to see the effort nest right into his arms, yet had the effort been a yard either way it would have been a certain goal.

With the opportunities mounting up and not being taken, the true cost was realised when a minute later the visitors took the lead when Mathews drilled in an excellent near post cross that saw Booth clinically fire past the stranded Herring. Brighouse then played a patient game for the remaining 11 minutes and put the icing on the cake in the 90+1 minute when Amos did superb down the right flank before picking out the impressive Maltas to finish marking his own excellent performance and producing a flattering scoreline.

Brighouse obviously are delighted to have recorded their first win at this level of football, for Teversal the report would say did well for an hour and had the chances been taken the story would very much different, but they wasn’t but plenty of pluses for new gaffer Paul Thompson to work with.

Teversal’s next two games are on the road, firstly a midweek trip to Tadcaster Albion on Tuesday (12-08-08) leaving Carnarvon Street at 5:00pm, then on Saturday (16-08-08) a visit to West Bromwich to play Tipton Town in the FA Cup, leaving Carnarvon Street at 12:00 midday.

The following midweek Tuesday 19th August 2008, the Tevie Boys are at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic in the KoolSport Northern Counties East League League Cup, kick off 7:45pm. However this game could be replaced with an FA Cup replay if the tie at Tipton Town is drawn.

OPPOSITION VIEWPOINT (taken from the HALIFAX EVENING COURIER)

Ecstatic Brighouse Town officials hailed a memorable day for the club as they celebrated a fully deserved victory in their first ever Northern Counties East Division One game.
A 49-seater coach had been laid on for the trip to Nottinghamshire as a reward for the efforts of everyone at St Giles Road in preparing Town for the big day. And Mark Brier's men repaid the compliment with a sterling display.
After matching their opponents for the first 45 minutes, they gained control after the break and went ahead 10 minutes from time when John Booth crowned a lively debut by crashing home at the near post.
And victory was sealed in the 89th minute when substitute Karl Amos beat two men before setting up Jordan Maltas who finished superbly to set the opening day party going in full swing.
"I'm absolutely delighted to get off to a winning start and I'm very proud of all the players and everyone at the club," said Brier, "There was a tremendous atmosphere all day from travelling down on the coach onwards and I was especially pleased that some of the lads who did not make the squad came down to support us. It could not have gone better and I'd also like to thank the supporters who travelled down both on the coach and in cars. It was important not to concede early and we achieved that aim. I said to the lads at half time that the match was there to be won and they responded and I thought we dominated the second half and deserved the points."
Brighouse had been hit by a double blow in the lead up to the game when Chris Woods opted to leave for Premier Division outfit Eccleshill United and Damian Melvin departed for Wibsey.
But they did not let it affect them and playing with an attacking formation, they matched their hosts in a cagey first half, and could even have taken the lead if their appeals for a handball in the area had been upheld.
And after the break, Brighouse stepped up the tempo with Ryan Brook in outstanding form, and got their rewards through Booth's goal which came after good work by Shaun Gibbons, Tom Holroyd and Brian Matthews.
Brier then switched things around and the home side rarely threatened a leveller before they were finally killed off by Maltas who sealed a win which puts Town in great spirits for their first home league clash at their new level against Yorkshire Amateur tomorrow.
