"A BAD WEEK GETS WORSE"

On Wednesday night (02-04-08) Teversal travelled to Hull to face Hall Road Rangers in the second leg of the Wilkinson Sword Final with the tie evenly balanced at 1-1 from the first leg.

The Tevie boys made an excellent account of themselves and were good value for their lead that Jamie Hudson had secured on 31 minutes. But on 73 minutes the game was turned on its head when the Referee awarded a penalty only he could understand, but wouldn’t explain after Barnwell fired an effort from two yards that hit Giles on the chest, but the Referee implied hand ball. Obviously this lead to total dismay and Woodcock was shown a red card for telling the Referee how wrong he was, Woodcocks only mistake in the game, yet the Referee made mistakes after mistakes that goes totally unpunished. Against the odds the game went into extra time, and Jamie Barnwell scored with only 9 minutes remaining. Teversal battled but even a last minute goalmouth scramble failed to gain them the rewards their effort deserves, with the Hull side picking up the trophy.

So on to Saturday and things went from bad to worst, when on 65 minutes Teversal’s new low of the season arrived when goalkeeper Jono Wilson received a season finishing dislocation fracture of his right ankle after a nothing type challenge with Barnwell.

Prior to this injury, the game was fairly even for the opening 25 minutes, with the visitors looking more threatening in front of goal with Wilson making four notable saves from Palmer, Barnwell and Dransfield. Then on 27 minutes the deadlock was broken when Hayward latched onto an excellent through ball from Thacker to calmly fire pass the advancing Wilson to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

On 41 minutes the game was as good as over when Dransfield free kick eluded everyone to find Barnwell at the back stick when he then fiercely fired in off the near and then far post before the goal was awarded to take Hall Road into a 2-0 half time lead.

The second half will be remembered for the sickening injury to Wilson, but there was a lot of positive for the home side, with 7 of the players for the last 25 minute being from the clubs Under 19’s team and they matched the successful visitors.

In fact if they had a little more fortune when Armstrong beat the off side trap to cross to 16 year old Rathbone who in turn slotted the ball past Nicklin but also marginally wide of the upright. That was followed by a stunning 25 yard strike by Townroe on 83 minutes, but the effort went marginally high and wide of the mark. Unfortunately the home sides efforts went unrewarded to leave a frustrated end to work that Hall Road extend their hoodoo over the Tevie Boys who have failed to win against the Hull side since being promoted three seasons ago.

Teversal’s next game is the final league game of this campaign at Carnarvon Street for this season, when yet another team hoping for promotion Bottesford Town are the visitors on Saturday 12th April 2008.
