“Pitch Wins The Day”

The bumpy pitch did no favours for either side who tried to play football and to certain extend did so to produce a decent game to watch, but the unpredictable bobbles was the downfall for both sides.

Regarding goalmouth action, for the first 20 minutes again both sides created openings, but didn’t bring the Keepers into action for anything more than routine interactions. A the 20 minute mark though a series of comedy errors saw the first real threat on goal. Pascoe’s untimely slip allowed the Vics Spencer with the time to pick out a cross, but he then shined it and spooned his effort goalwards, with Wilson looking like collecting the wayward effort with ease, he then stumbled only to see the ball land on the top of the bar and out for a goal kick.

Two minutes later the Tevie boys created a more conventional opening after a patient build up saw Townroe try a speculative from 30 yards out that marginally cleared the angle of bar and post with Stones rooted to the spot

Chances started to come more frequently and Wilson was alert when the Vics created an opening from a neat build up to find Pawley who fired in a powerful drive that the Teversal Custodian was equal to with a save low down to his left. Vics should have done better when on 34 minutes an excellent break down the left by Guy saw the tall striker deliver an inch perfect cross over the 6 yard box which caused some desperate defending before the ball fell to Spencer who guided his effort wide of the mark.

Townroe was again the threat for the visitors when he unleashed another powerful effort from distance that Stones failed to gather and was happy to push out for a corner as Short closed down on the loose ball. The resulting corner the ball fall to Townroe again, but this time Stones made an excellent save at the foot of the post and managed to hold on to this one.

The half time break saw Woodcock and Goodacre introduced for Rathbone and Stokes to initiate a change in system that saw the visitors have the better of the second half, without having total control or creating sufficient chances to show for their efforts.

On 56 minutes Teversal was hit with the sucker when their host to took the lead, when Guys heavy challenge on Wilson went unpunished with Pawley firing goalwards from the loose ball only for Gav Short to block the first effort, but Pawley made no mistake at the second attempt to make it 1-0.

Teversal continued to show the better football, with Woodcock, Scott, Townroe and Short getting in positions to be denied by either good defending, good goalkeeping or poor finishing. But their good honest hard work and effort in the difficult conditions reaped its rewards when on 84 minutes the ball was worked to Townroe by Woodcock to unleash yet another stunning strike that was met by an equally stunning save by Stones who tipped the effort onto the underside of the square bar only for the ball to drop down and hit Tom Lands for an unfortunate own goal to make it 1-1, which was nothing short than the Tevie boys deserved, but certainly was hard luck on the impressive Stones.

Teversal pushed for the winner, with the home side licking their wounds after feeling they done enough to win the game and cursing their misfortune to the way they conceded the equaliser, but the shared spoils was possible a fair result in the end.

Teversal now entertain Hall Road Rangers in the Wilkinson Sword Trophy Final 1st leg on Tuesday 18th March, 7.45pm kick off and then entertain AFC Emley at Carnarvon Street next weekend (22-03-08) with a 3.00pm kick off.
