Staveley Miners Welfare FC continue to push for a top 8-finish with a fine 3-2 victory against Teversal FC in a game of two halves. With Danny Robinson and Andrew Fox still out it was the same starting line up that began against Borrowash on Saturday but with Spencer Goff, Danny Brown and Jamie Jones on the bench. A poor start by Staveley was punished when Teversal took the lead through a well taken goal by Andy Woodcock in the 4th minute as Teversal were in the ascendancy in the opening stages. Staveley could have equalised in the 8th minute when Lee Gregory was through but he was thwarted when one on one by the keeper with a fine block. Teversal continued to push Staveley back and it continued to be one way traffic for half an hour with Teversal’s Brendan Sweeney running the middle of the park. Staveley rallied in the last 15-minutes but in first half injury time a defensive mishap let in Teversal’s Jamie Hudson who beat Rob Poulter to make it 2-0 that reflected Teversal’s dominance in the first 45-minutes.

A half time reality check and tongue lashing by Nigel and Don was dished out at half time and a different game ensued in the second half. Staveley’s young pretenders with an average age of less than 20-years old were up for the challenge straight away against their older opposition and it was no surprise when Andrew Broadbent sent Ryan Damms clear with a superb ball over the top and with a headed control he smashed the ball home on the half volley to bring Staveley back in to the game just 5-minutes into the second half. With Lee Gregory out right and Kyle Fores Chambers changing places Staveley were dominant and Teversal were reeling under the constant flowing attacking football from Staveley and just 10-minutes in to the second half Ryan Damms’s neat footwork in the box brought him his second goal and Staveley were on equal terms with 35-minutes left to play.

The Teversal keeper pulled off a number of good solid saves from Scott Ellis and Ryan Damms’s header after a fine Kyle Fores Chambers cross and Ryan Damms’s 20 yard effort shaved the post with the keeper well beaten. Teversal made 3-substitutions in an attempt to stem the tide from Staveley’s onslaught. Teversal had a spell where they continued to turn the Staveley defence with the direct ball but Staveley stood firm. Loud appeals for a penalty by Teversal were turned down with the referee just yards away from the incident. Staveley continued to threaten and looked the more likely to take the 3-points as the game neared its conclusion. In injury time Scott Ellis timed his run superbly well as he broke through and went one on one with the keeper but as the keeper saved and Scott was about to turn through to get his shot on goal he was brought down in the area and the referee had no choice but to point to the spot for a penalty to Staveley. Ryan Damms scored from the spot to give Staveley the 3 –points in a game of 2 halves.

Nigel Ransom said “We were rubbish in the first 45-minutes. Defensively we were all over the place and we got what we deserved in that period which was nothing. Certain players think they can do it their way and they’ve got to take things on board what we tell them . We ripped into certain players at half time and they responded and credit to them. We shuffled it a bit in the second half and we looked threatening throughout. I think we were the better footballing side but the result could have gone either way but they didn’t take their chances and Dammsy took his as we all know he can. Broads worked his socks off again and Kyle Fores-Chambers is getting better with each game. We’ve got training tomorrow but we’ll have a steady session for most but Robbo and Foxy will have to be put through their paces as we look to get the squad deeper with just 6-games left.”

With 22-points from 10-games in the second half of the season Staveley have got stronger as the season as gone on and hope to take their fine form into the last 6 games of the season where they face tough opposition in 5 of the top 6 and then a last game of the season at Scarborough Athletic. With last season’s well established and experienced Staveley side taking a seasonal tally of 51-points the new era would be delighted to equal that points tally from their current 43-points total which should be enough for a top 8 finish as 48-points last season saw the 8th club qualify for the prestigious Wilkinson Sword Trophy.
