| “Good Game – Bad Result Again For The Tevie Boys” Strong winds, bumpy pitch and two teams that have fell out of the promotion race, all the ingredients for a none event game, but anyone who thought that would have had a pleasant surprise because they were treated to a good game, played by two teams wanting to play football, that was decided on a defensive lapse and a wonder goal. But before the game, a sombre minutes silence was observed for Jeff Worrell the former Central Midlands League Secretary. Jeff will be remembered for the prominent part he played in helping and preparing not only Teversal and Barton Town OB, but also the likes of Rainworth MW, Bottesford Town, Dinnington Town, just to name a few in their quest to move up the Football Pyramid. All have only lost an excellent colleague but a friend too. One thing for sure, Jeff would have been proud to see the excellent facilities that have been developed at Marsh Lane and a game played in excellent spirit between two evenly matched sides. The first period really was a game of football chest with both sides moving the ball round well trying to find the killer opportunity to open up the opponent’s rearguard. But in line with the quality on show, both set of defenders came up to the mark with resilient performances through out. The first half therefore saw both Keepers having little to do, but when they were, they also showed a commanding performance, so a 0-0 score line at the break didn’t reflect the entertaining encounter that was on show and left you wondering where a goal could come from. On 55 minutes the first opening the home sides way, when Geraghty was set free but Barlow, but Wilson was alert and came of his line like a Gazelle to make a stunning double save to keep the scores on a parallel. Teversal then broke through immediately when Sweeney and Townroe combined well before the latter produced a cross come shot that beat Burley in the home goal all ends up, but the ball rattled against he bar then the post before being scrambled out for a corner. The break through came on 65 minutes when an uncharacteristic mistake by Giles allowed Barlow to intercept the Tevie defenders attempted pass before the home sides leading marksman finished past the stranded Wilson to make it 1-0. Teversal showed enough to get back in the game, but solid and at times desperate and fortunate defending by Barton kept he visitors at bay, with Hull being the main defensive pin holding it all together. The game was as good as over when Mark Anderson produce a stunning goal that would have graced any game in the 85th minute. The substitute simply picked the ball up with just enough time to take one touch before unleashing a fire home a 25 yard cannon ball into the top corner to make it a game, set and match 2-0. Teversal have played far worse and won this season, and can be proud of their part in an excellent game, that even Jeff Worrall would have also enjoyed. Teversal now entertain Staveley MW on Wednesday 5th March, 7.45pm kick off and then entertain Worsbrough Bridge Athletic at Carnarvon Street next weekend (08-03-08) with a 3.00pm kick off. |
