“ALL FAIR AND SQUARE AGAIN”

Pontefract Collieries arrived at Carnarvon Street hoping to pick up their first win since the opening day of the season and with Teversal also looking to pick a win after a series of 1-1 draws, you thought something had to give.

So when the Tevie boys started brightly and dominated the early exchanges and should have took the lead in the first minute when Luke Armstrong broke down the left flank to produce an inch perfect cross to the far post to find the onrushing Short, but the experienced front man put his effort wide of the mark. This set the trend with the home side creating an opening after opening, but simply couldn’t find the telling touch after some fine build up play.

With the opportunities going begging, Ponte started to build in confidence, with them starting to become a threat on the break. The better of their openings coming on 10 minutes when Longley created his own space by holding off Holmes to fire in a fierce drive that Wilson did well to block and then gather the weaker effort that followed.

Opportunities then swung from end to first a Tighe free kick went all the way dangerously across the visitors, with Short, Woodcock and Scott all marginally away from prodding it home. Ponte then went event closer when Duckworth picked up a Teversal clearance to fire a curling effort that smash against the bar, with Wilson well beaten.

Luke Armstrong making only his second start for the home side robbed Clark to have a clear run on goal but pressure on the young wide man Duckworth saw the chance go by the way side. With half time approaching the home side looked destined to take a deserved lead, again Tighe crossed and again it was marginally to strong with Woodcock unable to make the telling touch with the effort going marginally wide.

The second half continued in much the same vain, and one question being asked was how Ponte only managed one league win all season? With their honest hard work and endeavours there for all to see.

To try and change things, four substitutions were made (three for Teversal and one for Ponte) at the mid point of the second period and it was the visitors who reaped the benefit when on 67 minutes Duckworth seized on a loose ball after a goal mouth scramble to fire home of the underside of the cross bar.

Teversal pushed to get back into the game with an urgency coming into their game and gave the impression that it just wasn’t going to be their day. That was until Lyall found himself with time and space to deliver an inch perfect cross for Hudson to powerfully head home from 12 yards. In added on time the home side should have won it, when Bettridge and Hudson combined to release the other sub Walker, but the effort went unrewarded with the final score of 1-1 possible be fair score line.

Teversal travel to Humberside on Saturday 01-03-08 to face Barton Town Old Boys, with a 3.00pm kick off at Marsh Lane, leaving Carnarvon Street at 12.15pm.
