| "WRENS CLOSE IN AFTER DERBY WIN" Rainworth closed in on the race for the Premier Division after Tuesday night’s local derby victory between two outside promotion contenders at Kirklington Road. Early substitute Malcolm Brown made a quick impact with a 12th-minute opener, just four minutes after replacing injured home debutant Lee Mart. But Teversal will count themselves unlucky as Andy Woodcock twice hit the woodwork, before Danny Naylor doubled the Wrens’ lead in the 75th minute. Danny Tighe then set up a grandstand last five minutes when he pulled a goal back with a wonderful direct free kick, but it was the Wrens who held out for the points, leaving the Tevie Boys still without a win over their local rivals this season in four attempts. The match was superb entertainment for the 124 crowd – a healthily-sized turnout given several counter-attractions on offer on the night. A typical local derby started very competitively and in the second minute Robbie Clarke laid off to Danny Naylor who was dispossessed by Michael Lyall and the ball was cleared to safety. A minute later Craig Wilson came close to giving Wrens the lead, seeing his shot flash across former Rainworth keeper Jonathan Wilson’s goal. In the seventh minute Lee Mart, making his home debut, pulled up with a hamstring problem and was replaced a minute later by Malcolm Brown. Two minutes later Joe Naylor found Brown with a delightful ball over the Tevie defence, Brown’s cross into the area being cleared by veteran defender Jason Pascoe. However, the Wrens took a deserved 12th minute lead when Danny Naylor found Brown in space. The striker carried the ball forward five yards before beating Jonathan Wilson with a left foot shot from inside the 18-yard box. In the 18th minute Welfare played well out of defence, Robbie Clarke putting in Brown whose first time shot cleared the bar. Teversal were being restricted to shooting from distance at this stage, and Brendan Sweeney in particular had a shot from 25 yards covered by the alert Mark Hales. In the 26th minute a long clearance by Hales found Brown who turned and laid off to Clarke. Clarke’s snap shot on the turn was covered by Jonathan Wilson who turned it for a corner, Craig Wilson’s flag kick being dealt with ably by the Tevie defence. Tevie then broke from the back and Richard Giles had a chance, with his final touch just wide of Hales’ left hand upright. At this stage Teversal were creating more of the chances and in the 29th minute Andy Woodcock tried his luck from fully 35 yards with a dipping shot which Hales had to tip over the bar. Five minutes later Tevie almost snatched an equaliser when Tighe cut in along the by-line before pulling the ball back to Woodcock, whose shot hit the bar with Hales beaten. The match had developed into a ding-dong end-to-end contest, for Rainworth immediately hit back, and the Tevie defence had to scramble clear to prevent the home side from taking a 2-0 lead as the ball bounced around in the area. But Woodcock was unlucky again three minutes before the break when, with the home defence all at sea, he hit the woodwork for the second time in the match. A minute into the restart the Wrens had the chance to extend their lead when Clarke, having been put through by Danny Naylor, saw his shot hit keeper Wilson’s feet before going out of play. Shortly afterwards Gavin Short dispossessed Joe Naylor just as he had the chance to extend Welfare’s lead. Brown then had a shot turned round the post by Jonathan Wilson as the rampant Wrens dominated the early stages of the second half. Brown was replaced in the 67th minute by Lee Wilkinson, returning from injury, and with his first touch he almost brought a goal for Rainworth, Wilson in the Tevie goal having to go full stretch to save his first time shot. The Wrens increased their lead in the 75th minute when Andy Jones’ long throw into the box found Danny Naylor, who got his foot around the ball to lash it in past the former Rainworth keeper. Five minutes from time Joe Naylor fouled Sweeney some 25 yards out, and Tighe’s resulting free kick bent around the wall and beat Hales who was left clutching thin air. Teversal then went looking for an equaliser in the last five minutes but the Rainworth defence held out for a well earned victory. RAINWORTH: Hales, Jones, Bainbridge, Smith, Alberry, Draper, D.
