A DOMINANT Teversal performance saw Stace Leaper’s men end a miserable run of form with a 2-0 victory at Carnarvon Street.
The Tevie Boys had gone four games without a win before Saturday, although a Richard Giles penalty and a further goal from top-scorer Andy Woodcock saw them run out 2-0 winners at home to lowly Yorkshire Amateur.
Teversal, however, had little to show for their almost total dominance for much of the game before midfielder Giles’ late first half penalty.
Despite controlling play, Teversal were forced to wait till the 85th minute before adding to their lead, with Andy Woodcock pouncing on a defensive error to continue his rich goal scoring form.
Teversal dictated much of the early exchanges, despite nearly going behind in the seventh minute.
A poor cross-field ball let in Ammers’ talisman Simon Kirsima, whose stinging drive was matched by a brilliant save from ‘keeper Jonathon Wilson and an equally spectacular goal line clearance from defender Gavin Short.
The home side’s patience was finally rewarded moments before the break when Woodcock was felled in the area after a wave of Teversal pressure, leaving referee Karaivanov with no choice but to award the penalty.
Richard Giles stepped up expertly to slot the resulting spot-kick under the sprawling dive of Clark, who was kept busy throughout.
The second half offered much of the same Teversal dominance, with Simon Kirsima offering the visitors’ only reply.
Even his best efforts were snuffed out by the Tevie defence, who looked assured, despite having shipped five goals in last weekend’s defeat at Bottesford Town.
Teversal looked reborn, and came close to adding a second through Dean Short, who met a Tighe corner with a bullet header that rifled narrowly over the visitors’ crossbar.
As the game wore on both sides grew sluggish, making for a much slower end to a game that had started so openly – just as well that Woodcock would secure victory with his scrambled late strike.
After Jamie Goodacre had delivered the cross, the visitors’ defence failed to deal with the danger, allowing the lofty striker to extend the home side’s lead.
A final effort from substitute Daron Thorpe – whose late cameo galvanised Teversal’s second-half performance – threatened a third, although his effort was snuffed out by Yorkshire ‘keeper Clark.
