| “ROSSO GUTTED” Rossington where left wondering how they lost a game that they had total control off for the first half hour and 2-0 lead to show for it. This after taking the lead after 47 seconds when Lee Holmes cleverly turned Short before bearing down on the Teversal goal to calmly fire pass the advancing Wilson to stun the visitors. Lee Holmes who had recently been released by Unibond side Retford United was to be a thorn in the visitors side all afternoon and nearly doubled the lead after 10 minutes, but found Wilson the Teversal Custodian in fine form and made to an excellent save. First signs that Teversal may take part came on the quarter of an hour mark, when Hauton started a swift passing move that accumulated in an opportunity for Thorpe, but Rosso Keeper Whitehouse made an excellent save with his legs. On 24 minutes, it was 2-0 the industrious MacDonald got the upper hand in a midfield tussle before delivering a slide rule pass in behind the Tevie defence to allow Lee Holmes to calmly fire pass the advancing Wilson in similar style to his first. Even though the Teversal frustrations were clear to see, they started to add to the early igns that this game wasn’t over yet and on 33 minutes an intricate passing move saw Woodcock make a delicate pass through to Scott who elected to shot first time, with the midfielders effort going over the bar. Two minutes later Giles raced on to a ball in behind the home side and lifted his effort over the Whitehouse but also again marginally over the bar. So the warnings were clear to see and on 41 minutes a 2-0 deficit was soon wiped out. Firstly Tighe’s searching cross found Scott who brought the ball down in style to create his own space and time to produce a thunderbolt strike into the top corner. Virtually from the kick off the scores were level, when Thorpe and Woodcock hunted down the ball before combining well to create the opening for Giles to this time opt to fire low past the advancing Whitehouse to level the scores and create the half time score-line of 2-2. The second period saw the visitors have the better of the possession but Rossington certainly created enough chances to record a victory, but with Wilson in inspirational form and making two stunning saves that kept his side in the game. The first of those saves came on 55 minutes when a goalmouth scramble saw Teversal block no fewer than four goal-bound efforts, but the highlight of that melee was the stunning save by Wilson from a powerful drive by Lee Holmes. The second of Wilson’s safe was when that man Holmes again showed his quality by firing a low drive under pressure; Wilson produced an incredible save down to his right to dispel the danger. Teversal created openings of their own, but the final ball was often not of a quality to turn those opportunities into goals. Whitehouse did have to make one save of note, when Scott fired in a low drive that the Rosso Keeper saved well. But when you thought the Teversal pressure wasn’t going to break down the stubborn home side who looked they had done enough to get something out of the game, Hill conceded a needless free kick on the right corner of the Rossington 18 yard box deep into added on time. Tighe floated in the free kick into the danger zone, when Giles seized on the ball to smash it against the bar from 5 yards, but Sam Holmes reacted the quickest to fire in a late winner. That winner being the second season running the Tevie boys has grabbed a late winner at Oxford Street. Teversal were clearly pleased to win a game that they struggled in, but to gain a win when not playing well, clearly shows the battling spirit that is in the Teversal camp. This being their second win gained with a late winner out of the last three games and moves them to 3rd in the table, their highest position ever in the National League System. Teversal’s next game is a league game away at Staveley Miners Welfare on Tuesday 9th October 2007, kick off 7.45pm. Then on Saturday 13th October 2007 sees a trip to face Pontefract Collieries. |
