| “TEVIE VASE BROKEN” Calverton Miners Welfare progressed to the next round after pulling off a giant killing act that they well and truly deserved after showing far more desire and commitment than their Northern Counties East League Division One visitors. The Central Midlands League Premier Division side where lead by veteran John Humphries who showed the enthusiasm of a teenager, which was infectious to his team mates to gain what looks like on paper an excellent victory. But Teversal came into this game on the back of three disappointment defeats that has now become four and the ingredients were on the table for this outcome. Calverton were encouraged by a lively start and when Boulton delivered in the Teversal box after only 3 minutes, Boulton should have done much better when firing wide from 8 yards out. Both sides played a good open and entertaining game and Woodcock forced Walker in the home goal to make the first notable save after 8 minutes. The chances came and on 11 minutes Morris again wasted another opportunity when Wilson was quick of his line to block the Calverton striker who took far to much time when clear through. On 38 minutes the home side hit Teversal on the break with Boulton producing an excellent ball to the unmarked Morris who produced a well-struck effort that Wilson saved. But five minutes later the visitors showed they hadn’t heeded the warning and identical move saw Morris this time take the opportunity to fire the home side in front. The second half saw a true cup tie game and this is where the old war horse Humphries came into his element in organising the back line to keep his goalkeeper projected from the ensuing barrage from the visitors, with Andy Woodcock being the lone soldier in showing the desire and commitment to break down the resolute home rear guard. In addition to the solid defending, Calverton looked dangerous on the break but again the reliable Wilson in the visitor’s goal gave them assurance to take the risk to try and salvage this game. But the spirit of the home side lead by Humphries simply was more than enough to quell the advances of lack-lustre Teversal side. A further factor through out the game was the total inconsistent performance of Kevin Marchant the Referee, thankfully both sides showed restraint when what can only be polite stated as confusing decisions where being made and credit to both sides for not making the game a farce it could have turned out to be. One factor that really was a farce was the amount of time added on at the end of each half, this being totally less than what should have been played, the second half more than the first. The second period seeing Calverton employing time wasting tactics highlighted by Luke Smith who was taking goal kicks for his Keeper and throw ins that took an age, add onto that four and half minutes for treatment to Walker in the home goal and a further 3 minutes for treatment to striker Middleton plus five substitutions and the final mickey take on the Referee was when Calverton called for their third sub, the Referee, his assistant and the player being removed made their way to the bench only for the substitution not to be made, with this all adding up to more than the 6 minutes played. Even had a full 90 minutes been played, you couldn’t see Teversal’s forays forward being intense enough to break down the spirit that only a cup-tie of this nature brings out of the underdogs on paper, but 11 v 11 shows that ability counts for nothing if you don’t have the desire and commitment to match this. Teversal now return to league action on Saturday when they entertain Tadcaster Albion at Carnarvon Street, with a 3.00pm kick off and will be hoping to return to the form shown in the opening fixtures of the season. |
