| "RAINWORTH
HAVE LILLIE SUCCESS" After a dire game at Teversal’s Carnarvon Street ground on Saturday, the replay saw more football played in the first five minutes, than the whole 90 showed on Saturday. With the line in the sand clearly marked by both sides the respectful 185 crowd were to be treated to an entertaining encounter that saw the home side edge a win and an away tie at Biddulph Victoria a week on Saturday. Both camps made changes to the starting line-ups, but it was Teversal who created the first goalmouth action after only 2 minutes when Tighe’s free kick caused uncertainty in the home box with Hales being alert and happy to grasp the ball at the second attempt to deny Lyall an opportunity for the Tevie Boys. The Wrens had to wait until the 10 minute mark for their first opening of note, when a smart build through midfield saw Shaw set up Alberry for a strike at goal, with Jono Wilson equal to the effort to dispel the danger. Teversal imposed their passing and movement game to take charge of the mid period of the first period and when Tighe and Woodcock combined well down the right before the later delivered a low cross to Dean Short to set up a free strike for Lyall who drilled a fierce effort marginally wide of the mark on 25 minutes. Rainworth weren’t to be out done and created openings of there own, but notably the best chances came the way of Lillie on 29 minutes when a clever ball over the top by Naylor saw the striker with time and space to volley goalwards, but the effort flew high over the bar. Short and Woodcock created problems and openings in the home defence but the visitors failed to capitalise. With half time approaching the Wrens Craig Wilson went on a mazy run but failed to have the composure to match the run and his weak effort drifted wide of the target and ensured the tie remained level at break. The only thing the game needed now to add to the entertainment was some goals and again both sides didn’t fail to deliver on that score too. The first came after only 4 minutes of the restart, when the Tevie Boys would have been disappointed on how easy Adam Lillie was allowed to attack the box before finishing from a tight angle to give the host the advantage. Credit to Teversal for not panicking or starting to chase the game and sticking by the footballing principles to try and play their way back into the game. The threat the visitors offered was meet by a change in formation to drop more players behind the ball by the Wrens, with the counter attack being worked effectively with Naylor and Shaw picking out the industrious Lillie. On 72 minutes the Tevie Boys finally received their rewards when an intelligent ball from Tighe saw Lyall in a one on one situation with Nattriss, the young striker attacked the Rainworth box before laying the ball off to Dean Short who fired in a low drive that Hales did well to save, but Gary Atkins was on hand to fire home the rebound to the delight of the travelling Tevie support. Rainworth continued to quell the advances of Teversal, who was now pushing to try and win the game, but solid and resolute defending by the host shown why the Teversal goal was only the second they have conceded in six outings this season. Add the workmanlike efforts of Shaw and Naylor in midfield made the Wrens a constant threat on the break, something that became evident in the 79th minute when a superb ball from Naylor brought Shaw into play out wide and with Westwood closing him down the ex Retford United Manager rolled the ball across to Adam Lillie to clinically finish past the stranded Wilson in the Tevie goal to again bring the advantage to the Wrens. Unlike when they went behind the first time, Teversal failed to remain disciplined and play their structured football and play their way back into the game. Instead their approach was more direct and far to often a long wonder pass was attempted, but this played right into the web of the Wrens who had Alberry, Wright, Smith, Bainbridge and Nattriss quite happy to be sitting on the edge of their 18 yard box to simply attack any advances, but this was made even easier by the desperate long punts into the box that was easily dealt by the bank of five or collected by the unpressured Hales. Even any clearances by the home side where left for Shannon to chase down after replacing Lillie, but with the visitors undisciplined approach failing to create a single effort in the dying stages, it demonstrated how effective the home rearguard had become. Therefore Rainworth deservedly take their place in the next round after marginally having the edge in a very close game that both sides can be proud of for the part they played. Rainworth now prepare for a home encounter again on Saturday when they entertain AFC Emley in a league game and then they can prepare for the trip to Stoke for the next round of this cup, whilst Teversal have to pick themselves up for a League Cup Tie at Bottesford Town, leaving Carnarvon Street at 12.15pm. |
