"TEVIE 'AMMER OUT A VICTORY"

Teversal took to the road for the first time in this league campaign when they travelled to Leeds to face Yorkshire Amateurs, a club going through a transitional period that saw the Ammers putting out a very youthful side.

It was the Tevie boys who settled in what was a low key atmosphere and went close after only 2 minutes when Tighe picked out Townroe with a corner kick which the full back drove goalwards only for the mass of players to deflect it with Clarke just failing to stab home the loose ball. The home side hit back immediately when Roberts held off Hauton’s challenge before drilling an 18 yard effort marginally wide of the mark.

With Teversal having by far the best of the possession, they wasn’t troubling the home defence enough to create goal scoring chances to turn the possession into goals. The best chance in the opening exchanges came when Micky Clarke latched onto Scott’s through ball but his attempted lob was easily gathered by Clark in the Ammers goal. The home side did look dangerous on the break and on the half hour mark created their best chance in the first period when Kirsimia broke clear only to be denied by an excellent Wilson save. From the ensuring scramble Walton tried a cheeky back heel from six yards out but Hauton was on hand to easily dispel the danger. Only a minute later Walton looked like he could have a clearer effort when sent clear, but Wilson was quick off his line to smoother at the Ammers wide man’s feet.

Teversal’s response was to regain some composure and take a far more patient approach which saw better openings being created, firstly Walker set up Scott to fire in a calculated effort from 20 yards that went marginally wide of the mark. Then Giles provided an inch perfect ball through to Walker, but an excellent save by Clark denied the visitors the lead. On the stroke of half time Walton again managed to get in behind the visitors defence before dragging a fierce effort across goal and wide of the far post to let the visitors know that the home side were still a threat.

The second half saw much of the same pattern as the first, but the possession being held by the Tevie Boys was far more purposeful and created more problems for the home side. The reward came on 54 minutes when Walker seized onto Clarke’s flick on and when through on goal Hainsworth desperate challenge from behind gave the Referee Mr Mercer no option but to award a penalty, Danny Tighe calmly took the responsibility to send Clark the wrong way with a well placed effort.

The goal put a sharper edge on the Teversal game, and a period of total dominance saw the second goal arrive on 59 minutes and it was worth the wait. A crisp neat passing move from back to front and when Giles saw the opportunity he thread the perfect pass through to Walker who calmly picked his spot to fire past the stranded Clark to make it 2-0 and put a true reflection on the game.

But the goal, then saw the return to the less penetrating passing and slower tempo football from the visitors and that again allowed the Ammers to look a threat on the break. The home sides efforts were rewarded on 79 minutes when an excellent move saw Kirsima set the ball up to allow substitute Cooper to coolly pass the ball into the bottom corner leaving Wilson with no chance in the Tevie goal.

Having been pegged back in their FA Cup classic with Coventry Sphinx twice after leading by 2 goals in the last week, the final 11 minutes were now made that little more tentative for Teversal. But they showed the desire and commitment to hang on to record their club’s first ever away victory against their host, the 2-1 scoreline being a fair reflection of the game with Teversal having the better of the possession, but Yorkshire Amateurs deserved their goal for their honest endeavours and the quality of the chances they created over the 90 minutes.

Teversal’s next game is a Wilkinson Sword Tie at home to Tadcaster Albion on Tuesday 28th August 2007, 7.45pm at Carnarvon Street. Then on Saturday 1st September 2007 sees Rainworth Miners Welfare visit Carnarvon Street for the FA Cup Sponsored by E-On Preliminary Round tie, kick off 3.00pm.
